The Proper Way to Wash Your Face

(( ARE YOU WASHING YOUR FACE CORRECTLY? ))

Ever wonder why you are doing all the right things, you have the absolute best creams and ointments, but you’re still not seeing the results in your skin that you think you ought to see?   It may be because you are not washing your face PROPERLY.

Washing, or cleansing the face is, unfortunately, an overlooked and rushed-through step in our skincare routines that holds more weight than we know.  When washing our face at night, we are ridding our skin of environmental pollutants, free-radicals, and old secreted sweat and oils that rest on the surface.   It also helps to wash away dirt, germs, and bacteria transmitted from our hands and cellphone, makeup residue, and dead skin cells, all accumulated over the day.

When we cleanse our skin in the morning, its general purpose is to wash away overnight creams, and ointments applied the night before, as well as remove the waxy sebum that builds upon our skin during the night.  Oil glands, particularly in the face, tend to secrete sebum at a higher rate overnight while the body is at full rest.

So, as you can see, washing our face at night is not just a means to help us wind down for bed. Or, in the morning to help us wake up.  While it may lend a hand at these things, it actually serves a more sizable purpose.  And HOW you cleanse your face is particularly important.

Until recent times, unless you worked in the Healthcare or Restaurant industries, you likely were not aware of the CDC's Proper hand-washing guide of washing hands for a minimum of 20 seconds.  And by washing, we mean the moment the soap is activated by your wet hands while rubbing together to lather.  That entire session should last at least 20 seconds long before rinsing the suds from your hands with warm water.  Twenty seconds of hand-washing allows for proper removal of dirt, germs, bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms.  Any time less than that may put you at risk.

The same concept applies when washing/cleansing your face.  Except when washing your face, the washing session should last for a minimum of 60 seconds.  The pores on our face run deep, and the 60-second time marker allows for proper cleansing effects to take place on the skin.  Many people are unaware of this old rule of thumb for beauty-hygiene and do not implement it in their daily skincare routines.  And unfortunately, this lack of knowledge could cost you.
